May 2 – 4, 1988

Monday, 2 May.

After my usual morning routine, I registered for the talent show, then wandered  about a bit, photographing the long alleyways of 3 Deck and Midships Lounge, sitting by a window in Queen’s Lounge, then up to the buffet for lunch, where I gorged on salad, chocolate cake with chocolate mousse.  I sat with a lady from Wales who got on in LA.  Took some fruit and the QE2 bottle to C., but only left it because he was asleep in the pitch dark.  Then I went to the talk by Michael York about filming on location around the world.  That was followed by the profound film, “Empire in the Sun.”  I was a wreck and many others emerged red-eyed like myself.

I showered and waited till seven o’clock watching Nutcracker on television.  At seven I went to C.  We then went to the Pig and chatted with Mark and friends – then migrated to 6036 to start the party.  All told, only Dimitrios, Neill and Mark came.  Mark brought a Bakewell tart in a Harrod’s tin, and pried it open very awkwardly not having the proper tin opener!   We talked and ate till three or so.  QE2 was prancing more than usual.

Tuesday, 3 May

I was exhausted from my late night, so tried to sleep, but no luck.  I went up to see when the talent show rehearsal was scheduled for, and returned for more rest.  Did the rehearsal with Leesantoo.  Their accompaniment sounds somewhat nebulous, but when I returned at 2:30 skipping lunch for a nap – we did okay.  I sang, “Do re mi” with some children then “Climb Every Mountain.”  They were well received.

I returned to the cabin to pack and rested a while before dinner, where only Dorothy was present.  We ate quickly, then I roamed the Boat Deck in the chilly air.

Wednesday, 4 May – Southampton, England.

Was up earlier than usual to finish packing and make use of the last few hours.  Actually I showed up for breakfast in Columbia, where Guy was only just hanging on after wild parties last night.  Through most of this voyage, Elgar’s wonderful Song Cycle – “Sea Pictures” sung by Janet Baker – played on the bow channel and the mood has gotten to me.  I paced the decks a while just now, because I couldn’t stand the emotion looming up in me down there.  At 10:30 C. fetched me and we took his anthuriums and driftwood to his cabin.  We then had a long talk in which he unfolded some of his business experiences such as a owning and running hotel in Edinburgh, then later a country club in a Georgian house in Couper, and the Crusoe Hotel in Lower Largo, Scotland..  At 11:30 he had to prepare for work so I came up to Boat Deck just as we were passing Hirst Castle, which juts on the end of a long sand spit.  The sun is shining through high thin clouds.

I watched the ship sail up Southampton Water to the terminal.  Windy.  Lunch.  Julie left me a sweet thank you note.  Said goodbye, hugs to Mark in Mauritania, and saw Matthew and said goodbye, and hugged Dimitrios as he flew off.  C. emerged from lunch finally and when he returned with civvies on, and we went to Boat Deck to look ashore.  Betty and Frank, my friends from last year’s crossing, and with whom I am going to stay a while, were there and we spotted each other at the same time, which was a relief to me.  C. introduced me to an English couple he had served.  As we were a bit cool, we went inside to his cabin, where we walked in on a customs raid on his roommate, Dominique.  We beat a hasty retreat, to say the least.  (Actually C. had suspected there were drugs in this man’s possession, and reported him.)  We went to visit Neil’s cabin and friends, then headed for my cabin to get my stuff.  We walked to the Magrodome to sit a long time till I could disembark.  It was very pleasant to chat quietly with each other.  We plan to meet March 26 in Southampton when he’ll take an overnight off.  Finally my deck was called and we went through customs, met Frank and relations, packed the car and I said fond farewell to my favorite ship, the very special Queen Elizabeth 2, my home for the past 24 days.  I have officially become a member of the World Cruise club after qualifying for the proper number of days on board, combined with my crossing last year.

Cabin 4019.  A Columbia Restaurant cabin!

April 29 – May 1, 1988

Friday, 29 April – New York Harbor

We were at the dock by the time I awoke and emerged for breakfast.  We were supposed to eat at seven, but the waiters went on strike because John, the Columbia Restaurant manager was sacked last night.  They hoped to get action, but now their jobs are on the line.  At eight or so we were allowed in and the men in black suits were serving.  Waiters trickled in, so Guy and Darren explained the situation.  We support them.  I said goodbyes to friends, helped Emma off to the limo and returned to the ship.

Upon returning to the ship I met the chief Hygiene Officer (David Hamilton) who has invited me to his cabin 3006.  I am apprehensive, but couldn’t get out of it. I let the invitation pass.  Went to open seating lunch in Columbia and sat at a large round table by Starboard windows with a couple from Honolulu, and two ladies who got on in Port Everglades.  The other lady was from Auckland – quite a rugged individual.

When QE2 started away from the pier and into the Hudson ship channel, I kept the tape recorder from my position on bow Observation Deck going to get the sounds – especially that great whistle.  Walked aft and found Fred Boaden so we went out the channel chatting and taking pictures.  He had been off shopping.  The weather has been crisp, but as we headed out the channel, the wind became quite cold.  I can now wear my warmer clothes.

After dressing for dinner early, I walked around the different public rooms to see new people.  At the Lido, I met Edward somebody, and  we talked enthusiastically about QE2 – his many trips, upgrades, experiences with different classes etc.   I went to dinner at 7:40.  Guy is still serving at my table, but Darren has been transferred and we have a surly Irish boy from Dublin.  Peter and June, Nigel and Dorothy are my new tablemates – 3 English and one from Walnut Creek (an American).  Guy didn’t serve us much, and the other waiter was quite ungracious.

I attended the entertainment in Grand Lounge, which to my surprise and pleasure, included Nancy Booth from Tucson my home town.  We know each other, but I didn’t know she did the cruise ship circuit.  She looks great and sang beautifully.  Gershwin and Strauss.  C. came for me after eleven and after admiring the white roses, we went to the Pig.  Mark was there for a while, then we went up to the buffet.

 Saturday, 30 April

We are now on the historic Atlantic crossing, and I awoke early then went back to sleep till nine o’clock.  I then arose to walk around the decks.  Joined the boat drill. – up stairway A to the area outside Queens Grill. When the drill was over I again wandered this time to Grand Lounge at just the right time to encounter Nancy Booth.  We chatted.  She had just been talking with my waiter friend back there who told her I was looking for her.   Next I went to the Great Houses of Britain lecture in the Theatre.  Otley House, Saffron Walden, Ancient House (parquetry), Wilton, Sion, Kenwood.

I returned to the cabin for my Passport, but then had to wait till Columbia restaurant group’s turn.  I talked with Bob Doherty.  What’s the verdict?  “Okay, good work, but no time to schedule another recital.”  Not even time for a Nancy to do one beside her Cabaret stuff.  I then attended the lecture on “The Only Way to Cross” by John Maxtone-Graham.  I was so sleepy I fell asleep a while. I managed to stay awake through the Titanic narration and through Michael York’s introduction  to the film, “Cabaret,” but left for a nap from four till about six o’clock.  When I awoke, I thought it was the next day.

Showered and dressed for formal dinner, then went up to Queen’s Room to see how the cocktail party was going.  A waiter from the Isle of Wight served me hors d’oeuvres.  I had two orange juices, and chatted with a social hostess who was trying to include me should I be lonely. I was actually sitting back to enjoy all that was going on before me!  She came yesterday from the Carnival Line to work on QE2 with the youths, till June.

I attended the Cabaret again.  Nancy did country western, opera and “Cats” songs,  “Somewhere over the rainbow,” all superbly.  I returned to 4019 by 10:20 to wait as usual.  C. called for me after eleven and we did the pub bit, inviting our friends to a party we plan for his cabin.  Went to 6036 to sort and take inventory of his stuff.  To my cabin by 2:45 – he back to his to sleep.

Sunday, 1 May

We are presently sailing off the Province of Newfoundland and the fog persists as usual.

Awoke at 9:30 to the sound of the officer of the watch’s report.  I then heard the foghorn, so dressed quickly and went on Boat Deck to record the sound.  It goes about every minute.  Froze my hands and feet.  I then joined the queue for immigration.  The officer asked me how long I intend to stay and when I said six months, he asked me how much money I have with me.  Not satisfied enough with that he asked further info, and I told him.  I am now sitting starboard side next to Queen’s Lounge to write and read my book.  I can hear the foghorn every minute.

As I was milling around Grand Lounge and looking at the photos, I saw Fred Boaden, who was on his way to play for the Interdenominational Service, so I went in with him.

Officers conducted the service.  We sang four hymns including the seaman’s hymn.  Fred’s postlude was Jerusalem (Blake).

I returned to my cabin at noon and wrote a complimentary letter to the Hotel Manager, all the while hearing the foghorn every minute.  This letter was an attempt to counteract all the complaints I was hearing from various passengers.  It seems nothing is right as far as some people are concerned.  I have nothing but raves about my voyage, and wanted him to know so!

I then went to lunch at one o’clock, where I delivered the party invitation to Guy.  Steve is the new waiter, and is easing up with me now.  Had tomato juice, hamburger and salad, plus Sacher Torte with ice cream and chocolate sauce.  Yum.   Peter and June came in as I was finishing up, but I stayed to chat.  They told me about Flanders and Swan records I must get.

I next attended the second John Maxtone-Graham lecture, then went to Boat Deck all bundled up to listen to the foghorn again.  When I returned to the cabin, Julie came in with orders to close portholes because of ice chips in the water that might flip up and hit the glass.  Hummmm!  I received a letter asking for comments and received a grateful phone call from the Chief Purser.  Soon after, I received a lovely floral bouquet addressed to World Cruiser.  After supper I found a QE2 miniature jug of whiskey.

I did a preliminary packing of summery clothes, got ready for dinner, and was so early that I sat in some of the public rooms.  Lido, Theatre Bar and walked all around in between.  Dinner was a bit of a drag with Dorothy ( the one from Walnut Creek) but when the Dunbars came it perked up.

I went back to the cabin to watch television and await the night’s events.  Near one o’clock the phone rang and it was Chris and Cherie calling on Marisat.  We had a fairly good chat, but my voice faded so we cut it short.  I never did hear form C. and the party never came off.  I finally went to bed near two a.m.

April 25 – 28, 1988

 Monday, 25 April, 1988

I was on deck by a little past nine to see the beautiful harbor of Charlotte Amalie a fair distance away.  QE2 was anchored off shore so some islands obscured her from town.  I went down to five deck Stairway E to the tender, then strolled along the Quay to get better views of “Sea Viking” and “Festivale,” two cruise ships docked in the harbor.  I spoke to a young friendly pelican along the way.  Back in town, I spied Fort Christian in pink stucco, much like I remembered the structure in Christiansted, St. Croix.  Went into Cardow’s and selected sapphire and diamond pierced earrings.

I had a crazy lunchtime with open sitting in Columbia.  Sat at our table with Carol and Luann plus another lady.  Mark was wine steward on our station, and I had a crazy time with him.  Guy was his muddled and comic self.  He put chocolate sauce on my apricot tart.  He thought it was gross – so did I later.

Dinnertime was fun as usual.  I only had salad, spaghetti and a cream puff with ice cream for dessert.  Watched the Mick Urry orchestra a while, then finally caught up with Fred and made arrangements for a rehearsal tomorrow.  I left a note for Emma then quietly rehearsed in the cabin.

 Tuesday, 26 April, 1988

I was up leisurely and strolled a bit ending up in the breakfast buffet line.  I met with Fred Boaden for our rehearsal in the Midships Lounge and we worked for over an hour.  Many people passed by and some stayed to listen and applauded.  Fred can’t play the fast Baroque arias, so we’ve culled out 2 Mozart pieces and the Arne alas!  I may add some Broadway stuff.

I had lunch with Luann at the buffet, then milled around Boat Deck, resting and mentally practicing. Next  I went to my cabin, napped and watched a television movie about Burke and Wills the 2 Australian explorers.

At our dinner I had swordfish – good – but the key lime pie was wretched.  Guy told us he hopes to get to Miami tomorrow so we have to eat breakfast early.  I attended Monica Gutman’s third piano recital.  Back at the cabin I found Brigadoon on television.  After eleven, C. came for me and we went to the Pig for a while, where we talked in Mark’s corner a while, then he took me up on deck where the Funnel is, via Boat Deck, Queen’s Grill and up by the Crèche and Kennel.  Access is by a steep ladder-like step way from there on.  We stood looking out to sea and down a long way to the water, then lay in rather dilapidated deck chairs.  Now I know where the old used chairs go!  He said he was homesick today when he heard some people singing “Auld Lang Syne.”  On our way downward, he  also showed me the series of paintings of women around the Queen’s Grill walls, which I gather are thought to be quite special.

Wednesday, 27 April, 1988 – Port Everglades, Florida

I spent all morning sitting by the terminal waiting for my Aunt and Uncle, who never did arrive.  We somehow got our wires crossed, but actually I didn’t mind because I could watch all the hustle and bustle of departing passengers and the on coming ones ready to embark.

I had lunch in the Columbia Restaurant open seating – port side with Barbara, Luann and another well-traveled lady. I later tried to watch the movie, “Baby Boom,” but started to fall asleep, so I headed for the cabin to sleep.  Announcements regarding new passengers etc. kept coming on, so I finally got up at 5:30 and prepared for rehearsal with Fred at six.  He didn’t come till 6:20 so we rescheduled the time and I was able to dash up to Boat Deck to see us go out the channel to the sea.  People in high-rise apartments tooted and hooted as we went by and QE2 answered back with her histle.  Recorded it a bit.  Saw Luann and party on the bridge with the Captain, so photographed them all with Luann and Capt. Bennell waving at me.  A shower of rain fell as we went out, but it cleared later.   I went back to the cabin to prepare for informal dinner.  Went up early and chatted with Ruth and Ernie plus Carrol.  Hampton joined us and we finally filed in to dinner via the ‘back” way.  Guy reported he returned at 1805 and lost his pass because he had thought it sailed at 1900.  He did have a day seeing things, because a former passenger saw him and took him round.  I told Guy he’s qualified to be another adopted son along with Matthew and Mark.  We had the salmon, which was very bony.  We ordered our special Beef Wellington, shrimp cocktail and Baked Alaska for tomorrow evening.

Oh yes, Chris and family did receive the telex I sent and they telexed back the news plus an order for white roses.  These were at my door when I came down to dress.

I attended the show with two black singers, the dancers and a magician.  By midnight C.   had not come so I went to sleep in my clothes.  However, near one o’clock I awoke to a knock at the door, and it was C. telling me to get up, because we are going to a party.  Steiner’s girls were giving it on the stern deck under the fantail (docking deck), so he led me clear down the main fore-aft alleyway – through growing heat, stored goods, messes, etc. till finally we stepped over a huge bulkhead to the docking deck.  There we encountered loud music, a food spread and scads of people drinking and enjoying a good time.  Saw Guy, Robert, Mark (was photographed with him) and many others of my friends.  Met a Swiss cook who is a good baritone.  C. and I got some snatches of talk in between noise, dancing and chatter with his “cronies.”  Near three o’clock we left for the same walk back to the bow and my cabin.

Thursday, 28 April – at sea – My special recital day in the Theatre.

I was up after eight o’clock.  Fred and I rehearsed the recital in the Theatre from ten to twelve, while my hair was drying in curlers.  The performance went pretty well, so after a brief nap I went to lunch buffet, where I stood with Hampton and Carroll.  I ate, however, with Barbara, just the two of us for a while by the pool in the Lido under the Magrodome, then we were joined by Patricia Grey.  I just barely made it to the Theatre all dressed by 2:35, bearing the vase of roses, music, shoes etc.  Settled down by 2:45 and was introduced by Robin Parker and flew through the program.  Emma sat down in front – Louann and Barbara taped it from the first row.  Emma’s comment was “it’s nice to hear someone on key.”  Many people came down front to express approval etc. so it really went over well.

Barbara treated Fred, Louann and me to drinks in the Yacht Club bar, and we chatted about Fred’s family, job etc.  We broke up around 4:30 and all went our ways.  Fred walked me to the cabin with the music and flowers.  Pat and Paul came to return my trans-canal book, said goodbye, then I rested an hour or so till time to eat again.  I went up early and fell to chatting with Ruth and Ernie.  They liked the program.

For dinner, we four had our Beef Wellington, shrimp cocktail and baked Alaska.  Guy got to eat the 1/3 we had left over.  I then changed and went up to catch C. , who came out with the words “the concert was superb.”  He had come in late but heard all the Broadway stuff.  I then ran around the ship to stern observing the now empty crew deck astern.  It is chilly and windy so I returned to the cabin to watch television.  “African Queen” was on.  Slept near midnight.

April 22 – 24, 1988

Friday, 22 April – Caribbean Sea

I awoke relatively late, dressed and ran up stairway A around ten o’clock, arriving atop just as C. was heading down the lift. He returned for a quick comment then to a “muster” for his group.  I went outside to walk the deck and check the fantail.  Attended Waldemar’s lecture on Caracas, then simply wandered about among the shops, Queen’s Room and Grand Lounge till lunchtime.  This was the day for the Mauretania International Bazaar, and I met Luann for the eating of Buffet-served foods placed all over the sides of the restaurant.  Took pictures including one of Mark and one of Bryan and Robert, all three wine stewards.  Because of the crowds I wasn’t really successful in procuring what I wanted, and we two left, satiated, and walked around the deck together a few times.  We then parted and I played the piano in Midships Lounge an hour or so.  Contacted Bob Doherty, about the concert scheduling, but it won’t change because he hinted this was a trial run for the Trans-Atlantic run.  I left a bio with his assistant, then dashed to the Theatre to hear Vincent Price introduce his new movie with Ann Southern, Bette Davis, and Lillian Gish,  “The Whales of August.”   When he was finished, I left because I wanted to keep my date with C. in Queen’s Grill Lounge for tea.  He was quite busy at times and I had a nice conversation with a lady named Ann who is a choral singer.  She has been on tour to Russia with a group in Pasadena.  A shoreline with mountains is looming up to Starboard, South America I presume.

The headwind has been strong, whipping up the water with whitecaps, but the weather is beautiful as usual.  I went up a little early toward the dining room for dinner, and had a nice chat with a lady from San Francisco.  She was a choir singer but can’t sing now.  A college bum she calls herself.  I continued walking and went down to the pool and Spa, where I sat on a chaise a while watching the activities.  You will note I don’t mention the lifts at all, and that is because I am determined not to use them if at all possible.  I need my exercise and figure all the stairs hither and yon are more fun that pacing the Boat Deck all the time!

All four of us tablemates reached the dinner table at once for a change.  All had the halibut.  My dessert was a noisette and chocolate pudding – a tall narrow molded cake.  I then went to hear Gillian sing.  Okay I guess.

At eleven C. called to say he wasn’t finished yet and would go straight to bed,  so I went up to Boat Deck and sat in a deck chair until I started feeling the spray of the deck wash down crew,  then I went to the fantail and stood looking aft at the half moon and wake.  A distant light was on the horizon.  Tiring of that, I surveyed the forward view and went into Magrodome to listen to the dance music of the band, Onyx.  Back to the cabin by 12:40 and to bed.

Saturday, 23 April – Caracas, Venezuela

I awoke before seven and saw we were stopped.  By the time I emerged to Boat Deck we were backing in to the dock.  I joined Louann for the Caracas bus tour.  We drove from La Guira to the city via a mountainous super highway, up from the port past mountainsides with many houses built on the sides.  These are “ranchitos” which the immigrants build for temporary housing.  They are like squatters.  In town we saw the government center buildings and chambers, which used to be a convent;  went inside an ornately decorated chamber with its dome painted to depict battles for freedom from Spain.  We were constantly reminded to watch our purses and wallets, and in spite of vigilance, some people lost them.  Hampton reported four guys tried from all sides to get his, but they failed with him.  He is a big black “strapper” and could be formidable! Back on the bus we traveled around the city to the middle and higher income areas, then to the avenue of Heroes, where we took pictures.  I was very glad when I headed back to the QE2 by one o’clock.  Lunch in the Columbia Restaurant.

I attended the Venezuelan Folklore Show – dances and singing in the Grand Lounge.  Tried the movie and didn’t like it, so walked out and headed for the cabin.  Fell asleep till near six o’clock, then dressed for dinner.  After dinner I went with Mary to the Grand Lounge to watch the dancing.  Paul and Patricia were having a grand time with the fast dances.

C. fetched me at the cabin near eleven  and then we went to the Pig.  Most of these visits followed a pattern of drinks and general chatter with the various young waiters from all restaurants as they come off duty.  They are generally full of the events they had with their guests, and of course, complaints.  Some of them haven’t realized I am not part of the crew, which gives me a bit of a laugh.  I wouldn’t mind being part of the crew for sure!

Sunday, 24 April – Martinique

What a wonderful day.  C.  thought he wouldn’t be off, so I proceeded to get my launch ticket and wait for my turn to go ashore.  By 11:30 I boarded the tender, and again got pictures of QE2 in the harbor.  [The most beautiful picture wherever we go always seems to be  Queen Elizabeth 2.  People on shore gawk at her and we passengers look back at her when we leave her in the tenders!]

When we landed I photographed the statue of Christopher Columbus, then looked at the market stalls. As I completed my first round, I spied C. in his Thai shorts and shirt.  He had gotten “watch off” after all, so we were so pleased to have the day together.  A very nice taxi driver named Maurice drove us around the island, showing us flowers, jungles, villages, Sacré Coeur (downsized), all the while conversing in French.  C. speaks it well too.  We stopped for drinks along the way, first at a roadside stand and conversed in French with another man regarding politics.  I faked understanding.  Saw Montague Pelée the volcano and the town it destroyed in 1904.  Again, we stopped for a drink and C. bought me Anthuriums to make into a floral display.  He also picked a bird of Paradise and hibiscus.

Back in town, we photographed the statue of Napoleon’s wife, Josephine with Paul and Patricia, then searched in vain for food.  There is nothing open on Sunday, so we just had another drink and returned to the ship around four o’clock.    I dressed formally for a special “residual” cocktail party at which I finally got to meet Captain Alan Bennell officially!   We chuckled about the barefoot girl etc. posed for a picture, then I went off to dinner.  Guy and we three gals laid a bet on what Hampton would want to order, and he went ahead and pre-ordered a steak for him.  Sure enough Hampton agreed and he got his steak.  The little black- haired waiter is Darren.   Crème caramel for dessert at last!

I tried listening to Lynda Glory’s cabaret show “Bonjour  Paris,” then returned to the cabin via Boat Deck.

April 20 – 21, 1988

Wednesday, 20 April

Arose at nine o’clock and checked with C. around ten, when he announced he couldn’t come out because they were having a surprise Captain’s inspection and he had to clean up his cabin.  I kidded him about little Johnny can’t come out to play.  I then decided to walk around to Lido Deck, then remembered the Canal lecture.  Attended it and found it most interesting.  Ate the buffet lunch with a lady from Ft. Lauderdale who has been on board all the way.  A couple from Birmingham joined us for a while till I left for the Boat Deck near two o’clock.  I sat in the accustomed spot, first playing my recorders, then listening to my recital tape.  Got interested inquiries from a crew painter and the cockney jovial guy from the tender.

C. finally emerged around three thirty to report he must wash a shirt then will be out.  Ha!  Again I waited in vain in the hot humid air till after five, but finally gave up for the cooler cabin.  Did some washing and my shower.

I took a walk around Boat Deck and up to Sun Deck, then dressed for dinner.  Fred Boaden finally called me and came to talk about the music.  He seems apprehensive of tackling a classical concert, since he’s oriented for dance music, but will tackle it.   I walked up to Queen’s Room to peek into the special World Cruise party, then to dinner.  Had pasta, lamb ragout and coupe Souchard.  Guy was a sketch, this evening.  First he gave me two long rolls saying it’s the last chance.  He joshed Mary about not quite finishing her meal and speared her last piece of potato and handed it to her to eat, which she did while we all laughed.  Both Guy and Peter are happy young men; sheer delights; a real clown is Guy!

By the way, while Fred was in my cabin, C.  called to say he again fell asleep, while waiting for his shirt to dry.  I kidded him about it being hypnotic – We’ll meet tonight after work.  Meanwhile, after dinner, I attended the piano recital by Monica Gutman in the Theatre, and returned to my cabin by a little after ten.  Watched a modern version of the “Hound of the Baskervilles,” and waited till midnight for C. but finally went to bed without seeing him.  Stood up three times today!

Thursday, April 21, 1988 – Panama Canal Transit

I awoke at seven to see islands passing by, so got in my clothes quickly and zoomed on deck to join the throng.  Stood in the accustomed spot and at one point C. looked out and waved.  We passed under a large bridge at Balboa, then proceeded slowly into the left lock of Miraflores locks.  The “Azur,” a heavily lumber-loaded freighter filled the right lock and we started the rise of 54 feet.  When arriving at the Pedro Miguel locks C. popped out for a quick look, then back to work.  I tried the port side a while, which was shaded and much cooler.  C. managed 30 minutes or so in the sun as we passed through Gaillard Cut.  Took pictures of each other and the scenery.  He spotted an alligator, but I missed it.  After he left I remained a short time, then went back to the cabin as we entered the big Gatun Lake.  Feeling refreshed, I then went to Queen’s Room area to observe from a cool spot.  Ate lunch by myself at the Lido Deck and chatted briefly with a young waiter from Turkey who has only been aboard since Acapulco.   I went back on deck this time equipped with tape recorder, and when the QE2 and “Sea Wind” tooted their horns I got it on tape.  I was standing on forward observation deck.  Paul and Patricia were up there so we took pictures of each other.  Paul also joined me occasionally where I was sitting and we talked of our memories when Pearl Harbor and President Kennedy’s Assassination happened.  All the while we were in this huge lake of tropical rain forest surrounding us.  I was reminded of the everglades with hummocks, but then I reminded myself of the immense leviathan under me to bring me back to the wonder of it all.

C. came out briefly as we were waiting at the First Gatun Lock.  We were delayed there because of an electrical failure on the first locomotive.  The brusher wasn’t making contact with the power rail.  C. had to go in because he said he was being watched.    We went through the three levels of the Gatun Locks finally, and all along people on shore waved and cheered us as we waved back.  Some of the employees in the control towers came out to the level of Boat Deck to greet and be greeted.  Some of the people said security was very tight, but I didn’t see any evidence of it.  Some saw men with guns but again I didn’t.

As we pulled away to the Caribbean, I was talking with a woman from Indiana.  She is a violin, viola and cello teacher so we had much to talk about, since I used to play ‘cello as well.  I returned to the cabin by five o’clock to prepare hair, shower etc. for dinner.   Met Hampton for dinner and we ordered the lamb chops.  These came with little dough cups of mint jelly.  Pasta to start, and a rich gateau and ice cream with chocolate sauce finished us off!   I wandered back to the cabin after nine o’clock, sewed up my slip finally and listened to oldies on the TV-radio channel (18).  Guy is still very funny.  He gives me a hard time because I gave up trying to eat little – “What happened to the days when you only wanted a slice of pineapple?”

Having returned to  my cabin, I realized I didn’t have my sandals, and surmised I had left them on deck.  I then dashed barefoot up stairway A two steps at a time from Four Deck to Boat Deck.  On the way, as I barreled by the forward entrance to the Mauretania Restaurant, there was Captain Bennell with his wife Sheila also heading upwards.  I slammed on my brakes, and made a big deal of him catching me in my bare feet, and we joked a bit about it.  Fun. He assured me I would find those sandals still there, and yes, I found them and beat it back to wait for C.’s call, which came near eleven o’clock.  He fetched me for the trek to the Pig, where I saw Neil, met his mom Sheila, and chatted with C. about the wet floors in the kitchens, US inspections of food quality, and his day in general.  Saw Bryan at the bar.  We also discussed ideas for my party.  He only gets three weeks off in June.  — We then headed for the bow deck, and watched the stars.   We wended our way to the cabin via the maze and a brief stop at his cabin.

April 16 – 19, 1988

Saturday, April 16 – at Sea

I arose near nine o’clock and went to see Bob Doherty, then did some practicing in Midships Lounge.  I attended the lecture on the Caribbean area, then booked tours in Acapulco and Caracas.  Lunch came shortly afterward.  Joshed a bit with Guy.  Hampton has a new cabin and showed it to me (2122).  It is a single but large and with bath.  Dark paneling makes it look posh and more refined.  Oh yes, at ten I hailed C….  Yes, he fell asleep with his clothes on too and awoke at two o’clock to prepare for bed.  I said I forgive him. He called me again to say “the bed won again,” so I wished him a good nap.

I dressed in formal attire again for dinner and Hampton and I are still the only ones at our table!  I walked around Boat Deck seven or eight times, searching for stars and chatting with various people I met en route.  Spied Queen’s Grill, but hesitated to get C’s attention, since a superior was always visible too.  A knock on the door came later, and we had a little time together reviewing his trip and talking.

 Sunday, 17 April

What a beautiful day of warm weather and bright seas!   I went on deck and did my usual search for C.  While I was talking to some people by Queen’s Grill Lounge C. got my attention so we chatted by the door.  He looked so fresh and happy as we planned a sunning in the afternoon.  I went on my way aft on Boat Deck and found a spot by the Fantail pool where I read a while, swam in the pool there, then relaxed in the shade till lunch.  Stood in line with Paul and Patricia from Melbourne, and ate lunch in the buffet with them.  We had a nice table for 3 in a corner and we talked about our respective multi-national societies.  I stood and later basked in the sun on Boat Deck.  C.  came to sun with me for about an hour in which we talked endlessly.   He really liked listening to the tape of Scottish songs so I let him take it to listen on his own.  He really could be sacked for seeing me in passenger accommodations.  There is a “patrol” of sorts.  He and I walked down Stairway A to my deck and parted.

I watched a documentary on Placido Domingo, then prepared for the Captain’s Cocktail party.  When all decked out, I went up to join the very long reception line.  I gave up after a very long time and went to dinner.  Two ladies have been assigned to our table, Mary and Carol.  They are numerologists!   I then attended the piano concert in the Theatre.  My dinner was salad, Bordelaise soup, chicken Cordon Bleu and vanilla soufflé. Yum.

Around eleven C… knocked at the door and we went to the Pig.  Saw my usual friends, and as I was heading for Mark, I slipped and made a very ungraceful fall on the floor.  Much joking and concern ensued, not to mention embarrassment on my part. “Just call me Grace!!”  I stayed till 1:30 AM then went back to the cabin.

Monday, 18 April – Acapulco

I was up early in order to get the first launch for Acapulco.  The ride along the bay shore was spectacular with the horseshoe shoreline closing in all around and QE2 in the middle of it.  I took the bus tour 12 around the city to La Quebrada, where divers dive off a high cliff into the water below.  Then we went round the bay to a shopping center, up to a ritzy hotel resort, the Princess Hotel, which is like an Aztec pyramid.  There we were dropped to shop and view for thirty minutes.  We drove back via the coastal highway with sights of QE2 in the bay.  She looks so grand and majestic.

I met a gal named Louann and we ate lunch together in the Princess Grill, since Mauretania was closed and Columbia was full.  We acted quite giddy and tried to be sedate.  Finally we managed to settle down to grapefruit, yellow fettuccini, tomato sauce, then chicken and vegetables, followed by ice cream and chocolate sauce.  Princess Grill is very intimate with red décor and softer pink seat backs.  There are four statues depicting sea nymph types with mother of pearl skin, coral branch décor and other sea-related materials.  We sat side by side looking into the restaurant toward Acapulco’s shoreline.  Service was lovely and atmosphere peaceful.  We thoroughly enjoyed each other and sharing the experience.

After lunch I hailed C.  from Queen’s Grill and he came out all “sweaty.”  They too had overflows from Columbia and he was harried.  He went to his cabin to get money

for me to buy items and mail letters, since he would not be able to go ashore today.  Luann and I set out again in the launch, walked to the Post Office, then proceeded to the Flea Market.  I found most of C…’s requested items.  Mark greeted me and we walked part way back with him.  Louann wanted to duck into Sanborn’s so Mark went on.   We were back on board by five o’clock to relax.  I am glad this part is over!  I slept a bit after watching the departure from the harbor just as the sun was setting.  Again I was up front when the whistle blew.  What a glorious sound!

I ate most of my dinner alone again.  Hampton came late.  I had spinach soup, and tuna, and meringue and ice cream with chocolate sauce.

 Tuesday, 19 April

I got up near nine o’clock, washed my hair, then stood on Boat Deck waiting for C.  Meanwhile, Hampton came strolling by so we chatted animatedly for a while.  Caught C’s eye and we waved.  Around 10:30 he got off work and we met by the deck door.  He was still very weary so we walked together down A stairway, and parted once more.

At present I am in the Theatre balcony waiting for Waldemar Hansen’s lecture on Martinique and St. Thomas.  I left the lecture a bit early to make contact at the entertainment office.  Bob Doherty wasn’t there but I left a note.  I returned to the cabin, got my curlers from Emma and put up my own hair to curl till lunch.  I ate alone in Columbia.  I practiced piano at Midships lounge briefly, then dashed to Bob Doherty’s office where we finally made contact.  He had the wrong cabin number all this time.  Fred Boaden (4225) will accompany me.  Went to look up C. , then, it being so very hot out, he stayed only briefly in my cabin, then went to nap again.   Left to my own resources, I went to see the Vincent Price movie, “Laura.”  He, by the way is on board and gave a lecture on villains.

I took my bath in Hampton’s tub and prepared for dinner, with the thought in mind of crashing the Mauretania cocktail party.  This I did and got to see C. a little bit.  Met Paul and Patricia who invited me to join them.  Paul asked me to dance – a two-step I believe he said.  I then lost track of C. and went in to my Columbia Restaurant dinner.  We saw Mary and Carol, who still felt they weren’t assigned to our table.  I assured them no one else was there so they again joined Hampton and me.  I had shrimp cocktail and lobster tail again, followed by trifle for dessert.

I listened to Mozart symphonies and Bach organ works till C.  came to fetch me after eleven.  We went to the Pig for a while, but few of his buddies were there.  He sorted and decided on silver chains of Robert’s for his kids.  We went on to the bow (crew only) deck and enjoyed the soft tropical air and stars.   He kicked over his drink and it dripped onto my seat before I could get up.  What a mess!  I returned to my cabin before 2 AM.

April 14 – 15, 1988

Thursday, 14 April

Up to bright cloudy weather, bright blue choppy seas and large swells, but QE2 charges ahead unaffected.  I took my piano music to Midships Lounge and practiced my oldies for well over an hour on the piano.   Hampton had slipped in to listen.  Carol somebody from Ft. Lauderdale struck up a conversation re: piano.  She was a ballet dancer and recently took up piano from scratch.   I returned to the cabin to practice, but got shushed by my neighbor, so turned on Channel 1 to see our progress and got Bach’s Brandenburg concerto.

Before lunch I walked around, ending up in Queen’s Room, where I found myself standing behind Emma.  We exchanged addresses and went to the buffet lunch together, talking about music and men.  Then, of all things, she came to my cabin for me to wash and set her hair!  On the way, we went through the Yacht Club bar, new to me, and a game and crafts room just off Lido Deck promenade – also new to me.

I waited till 3:45 for C. to call, and he was tired so rested and made plans for 9:30.  I went to see the movie “Batteries Not Included” then showered for dinner.  Oh yes, I think the Theatre would be okay acoustically for my recital, but the Queen’s Room might be more intimate and that’s where Robert Merrill gave his recital.  Emma is a Dr. of music from Juliard.

Swells were quite large all day and white caps made the aqua and deep blues of the water very sparkly.  I met Hampton before dinner, and during our conversation, he asked me point blank if I was a millionaire!  He has a limousine business or something like that.  We ate by ourselves till nearly 8:40 when Bertha and Len arrived from their party.  I left fairly soon after nine and again spent a long time playing the piano at Midships Lounge.   At ten I was ready to receive C.’s call, which didn’t come till after eleven.  He finally picked me up and we again went to the Pig.  Mark came by and we hugged.  He plans to see me on his leave in July or August.  Bryan came to say hello and it took me a while to place him.  He was the guy I chatted with after Mark departed in August last year.  C…   and I talked avidly amid the din.  He is 48.  We kidded about our ages and he was incredulous about mine.  Finally, we left around midnight for my cabin, where we continued our conversation re:  Cunard, QE2 and standards.

Friday, April 15 – Los Angeles

I couldn’t sleep until 2:45, then awoke at six o’clock in time to see the ship silently and slowly slip into her berth (93) in San Pedro.  I went up to Boat Deck to greet the beautiful sunny clear day.  Spent on Starboard Boat Deck, then wandered around a bit.  When I spied Len and Bertha I said goodbye to them.  I missed my rendezvous with C. because of the Coast Guard Boat Drill in which all crew were involved, so left a note at my door for him to join us.  Waited a long time dockside for the family.  Near noon I spied John Q. pushing Emily in the stroller, shortly thereafter followed by Cherie and Ben.  Cherie had met John in the Long Beach Airport and his plane came at 10:30.  C…   showed up after a while, then finally Chris.  We all piled back into the cars for Ports ‘o Call restaurant.  The meal was very leisurely and all got well acquainted.  When we were through, C.   did a bit of shopping and, back at the ship we said goodbye to John.  The trunk made it on board almost immediately.  (The trunk is for the extra Winter clothes and stuff I will need for my proposed year in England pursuing musical activities and staying with my cousin in Bristol.  It stashed easily on its tall end just under the porthole in the nook by the extra dresser.)  C…. then took Chris to his cabin, and Emily and me through all sorts of crew’s quarters as well as the major passenger parts.  Saw – crew mess, kitchens, sunroom, library, both pubs, and up to bow deck, nearly everywhere.  He left us after five o’clock and the family left at 5:45.

After Chris and family left I returned to the cabin till just time to observe our departure from the dock.  I stood forward on the observation deck talking to an Australian couple, and later a nice gal who also has a love affair with our QE2.  The ship’s whistle sounded and since I was so close to it, I was very startled.  The vibrations could be felt in my body!  As we passed the “Azure Seas,” it tooted at us, and we answered back.  Wish I had had my tape recorder handy.  When I had enough, I headed for Columbia dining room and ate with Hampton – just the two of us.  The crowd level has risen as well as sound level.  We have a new waiter named Peter to add to Guy.

Feeling a little down, I simply returned to the cabin to await C…’s “tinkle” on the phone.   At ten thirty he did call to say he would be through in half an hour, but in fact he never came and I fell asleep near midnight in my clothes, awaking later to prepare for bed around two o’clock.  QE2 proceeded majestically along, cradling me in my blissful sleep.  Make the most of every minute, be sociable, participate etc.  Emma’s cabin is 4008.

April 11 – 13, 1988

Monday, April 11 – Lahaina

I was wakeful a lot, so felt the sway of the ship and chop a lot.  We are anchored off Lahaina, and by 8:15 I was on the launch for shore – the first one of several launches and trips back and forth.  I simply strolled along Front Street and was back at the ship by ten o’clock.  I took the opportunity to explore more decks, but was so tired, I decided to head back to the cabin to catch up on sleep..   I played the piano near Columbia Restaurant till lunch and the ship got under way.  While standing on Boat Deck, a fresh wind came up – white caps and all, and it’s very blustery but clear out.  Boat drill at Club Lido – tea – Dinner.

At 9:15 I met C…. and we went to the pub.  Met Scott from Scotland and Steve, then saw Mark in and out, and Matthew.  I talked with many re: music, their escapades in foreign lands, then near midnight we walked back via narrow windy corridors right to 5 Deck and to my cabin.  He came in to see the cabin and said good night.

Tuesday, 12 April – at Sea

I arose at 8:15 and lingered in the cabin.  I sent the telex to Chris then wrote cards and letters.  Julie came in to tidy up.  I went to Club Lido after lunch and lounged on a deck chair listening to tapes and then rehearsed my program back in the cabin.  Alas, I missed hearing C…. knock because of my earphones etc., so I found a note slipped under the door.  Attended a concert by a duo, which sang Broadway and light opera stuff.  Lingered up on Boat Deck and C…..  came out to invite me into Queens Grill Lounge for the last few minutes of tea, then we walked down A stairway and parted for him to shower and go back on duty.  I prepared for dinner. We’ll meet again tonight at 9:30.

We went straight to the pub and he showed me several more sets of photos.  Many of his friends again gathered round, Robert, Matthew, Mark, Scott and others, and conversation came round again to new developments such as Mauretania being changed to full plate serving and wages reduced to $50 from $600 a month.  Many will leave the ship because of this.  AT 1:15 a.m. escorted me to his cabin, then mine and the goodnight was brief.

Wednesday, 13 April – at Sea

Spent the morning in my cabin (4019) waiting for my hair to dry.  When I did emerge, I immediately ruined my set by going on Boat deck and Sun deck where the wind was very strong.   I spent some time in the Theatre Bar where a synthesizer and drum combo were playing dance music.  Two very lively older couples were dancing superbly.  Bertha and Len returned my tape with compliments.  Emma  came over so we decided to meet after lunch, which we did, and she came to my cabin to hear my rehearsals.  She was Barbra Streisand’s voice teacher!

At teatime, I went up to Grand Lounge for tea and interviews with John Butt, Cruise Director and Bob Doherty entertainment director.  Before lunch I had gone up to Queen’s Grill to greet C. but he was not yet returned, so I left him a note.

Dinner was again formal, and Bertha, Len and Hampton joined me in shrimp cocktail and lobster tail entrée, which we had specially ordered at lunch.  Scott brought me the verbal message that C. was working late tonight and would call me later.  I tried to see him after dinner, but he was too busy.  Heard two numbers of the Ben Vereen show, then returned to the cabin.  Caught “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.”  C. called and popped down so we watched the end of the film from my bed.  He left by 11:40 and I turned in.

1988 HONOLULU TO SOUTHAMPTON

APRIL 10 – MAY 4, 1988

I had booked this voyage for LA to Southampton, but due to a promotion, my travel agent  managed to get me on a plane to Honolulu for four extra days on board.  Consequently, I flew to Hawaii and took a cab straight to Pier 10 by the Aloha Tower, where I had to wait more than three hours before I could go on board QE2.  I chatted with many people, saw and hugged Matthew as he breezed by, and at 3:30 p.m. I checked in and found cabin 4019, very close to A Stairway, which goes right up to Queen’s Grill and Boat Deck, passing the Synagogue and Computer Learning Centre, and Mauretania forward entrance.

I peeked into Queens Grill just as my friend C… was passing through.  I got his attention and he came over to the door with a surprised look on his face.  He showed me the dining room and his station.  He also gave me tea and sandwiches in Queen’s Grill Lounge and departed to change clothes.  While he was away I chatted with Paul  a young waiter from Somerset) and when Pattie Atkins came round the corner, I re-introduced myself to her and thanked her for the information about Penzance etc.  She invited me to visit her in the Crèche again.

C…. reappeared in black silk shirt and speckled jacket.  Got him to button up one more button so he would look more “dressed” for the cocktail party.  He had invited me to join him and we rode for miles in a taxi around Koko Head to a super posh neighborhood.  The “newlyweds” whom he had served on the last segment of the World Cruise up to Honolulu are very rich and had a fabulous house right on the lava and ocean.  Hawaiian entertainment accompanied drinks and buffet.  We stuck together and talked constantly over to this party, during and back to the ship, and then we parted, because he had to return to work, and I returned to my cabin, 4019 This is an outside twin with a very interesting little nook with a dresser and mirror, and nothing else right next to the porthole.   I unpacked my bags and arranged the stuff, took a shower and went to dinner in Columbia Restaurant, where I found table 281 with Len and Bertha and Hampton, a recent widower who used to travel often on QE2 with his wife.  We have an Italian waiter and an English blonde guy – not thrilling.

I hailed both Matthew and Mark in Mauretania dining room, where Mark is wine steward (dressed in black).  Matthew looks the same!

I attended a concert by the Honolulu Boys Choir, then waited hours in vain for C…. to arrive.  I gave up at midnight and went to bed, but when the ship was ready to cast off, I dressed and went on deck to watch the departure.  I was back in bed by 1:30 a.m.

FRIDAY, August 21

Friday had already dawned by the time I got to sleep and I had only three or four hours.  Arose at six and was at breakfast by seven.  Matthew breezed in a little later like a whirlwind and served us a bit slap-dashedly. He had an extra English muffin and tried to find whose it was.  Finding no takers he slipped it off onto the tray and stacked the plate in the warming oven.  Later another guest ordered one and he resurrected the muffin and put it on the warmer, later to serve it.  He knew I saw it and we chuckled knowingly. Mark was not serving, and I put a note on Aunt Audrey’s envelope, hoping to get his mom’s address.

We pulled into Southampton and were quayside by a little past noon.  The weather is very hot and muggy. I stood atop the sun deck to see the operation.  At present I am in Queen’s Room starboard side awaiting my last meeting with C….

He found me and we sat to one side of Queens Room enjoying each other’s company. I joined Aunt Audrey and we played cards a long while until we were told we could disembark at 3:15 PM.  I claimed all our luggage, boarded the train and waited till 4:25 for it to leave.  Then it was very erratic because of not being scheduled, and we arrived London by 6:45.  The trip has only begun but the major attraction is over.  I have met some special people and was able to be of some help friend-wise and maybe mother-wise.

A special memory I will hold is of one evening when we encountered rather rough weather, I stood on portside just aft of the steps up to the Observation deck (that was closed off), I leaned over the railing to enjoy the wonderful waves and spray.  Each time when I saw QE2 plunge into the oncoming waves, I would anticipate when the spray would reach me, and pull back just in time!  While doing this, I heard myself saying, ” You sure are your Father’s daughter!”  Yes, I thought of him often on this reunion with the marvelous experience of the sea!
